BLUE MAURITIUS !  Most wanted item among collectors !! ??

Some facts; did you know them ?

Released on 21 September 1847 The Isle of  Mauritius ( Seven years after England's gummed Penny Black showing Queen Victoria) was designed/produced by Joseph Osmond Barnard.

He was ordered to produce 1000 stamps for Mauritius: 500 pieces one penny red and 500 pieces 2 pennies blue.

The first edition indicated on the left side: POST OFFICE. At the second edition the phrase POST OFFICE had been replaced by POST PAID.  For a long time  therefore the idea was hanging around at collectors, that the indication POST OFFICE was the very first misprinting in "stampworld". We know better now, since the phrase "POST OFFICE" was at that time the official postal organization's name.

Due to the sudden demands of Lady GOMM ( the wife of  Mauritius' Governor needed the stamps for some invitation letters anxious to follow the new postal rules), only 2x 350 pieces were printed instead of 2x 500 pieces.

Nowadays only 4 mint pieces of two-pence remain  being owned by: British Library (as of 1891)  - British Royal family (as of 1904)  - The isle of Mauritius (as of 1993)  and the Dutch PTT Museum (as of 1994)  .

The famous Bordeaux cover (from Mauritius via England to Bordeaux France) - carrying 1x one penny and 1x two penny - was auctioned in 1993 and sold for 5 Million Swiss Francs.

Above data consulted of Netherlands PTT Museum files (Author Charles F.C.G. Boissevain) (The Hague 1994)
